After mounting an expensive petition drive to get on the ballot, the union-backed North Carolina Families First has got be disappointed that their hand-picked candidate, Wendell Fant, has decided he won’t challenge U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell, D-8th.

Fant issued the following statement this morning:

Today, I informed North Carolina Families First that I would not run for Congress. I am honored that so many voters in the 8th District wanted me to be an advocate for working families. The message they sent to our member of Congress is clear: Never forget working families as you make decisions in Washington that affect their lives here, in Concord, and Fayetteville and throughout the District.

It’s definitely good news for Kissell, who has now successfully fended off two challenges from his own party (the other being a primary challenge from Nancy Shakir).

Fant used to work for Kissell. The congressman filed an ethics complaint against Fant in recent weeks, accusing him of misusing government-issued equipment for personal pursuits.
