The Journal gives it straight up:

Heart of the Triad advocates want local elected officials to get in the fast lane as they consider whether to support this regional planning effort.

Supporters of the Heart of the Triad want to get money this year from the N.C. General Assembly for the planning process, and want local governments to approve going forward with the plan in March.

……while the N&R highlights local leaders’ skepticism:

With plans to develop the area with a focus on technology such as biotech and nanotech companies, logistics and transportation, and retirement communities, elected leaders Monday expressed concerns about the possibility that the new region could take jobs and development from existing hubs such as Greensboro and Winston-Salem.

“The efforts of Heart of the Triad must not suck away from the efforts of governments,” said Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines at a meeting discussing the Heart of the Triad.

Specifically, Joines and others were concerned the new region could draw future companies away from business parks in Greensboro and Winston-Salem created for the biotech industry.
