I’ve got a friend —a Dook fan –who always claims that UNC gets favorable coverage from the local sports media because all the sportswriters are Carolina journalism grads.

Never taken the time to verify that claim, but I still couldn’t help but notice that USA Today’s been doing the heavy lifting in the P.J. Hairston case, uncovering the nice little rental car business Haydn “Fats” Thomas has going on.

Hairston was driving a a 2013 GMC Yukon— which had been rented by Thomas —- when he was arrested on June 5 and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license. A 9mm gun was also found outside the car, but there have been no gun charges against Hairston.

The N&O follows up and reports that cars rented by Thomas have been repeatedly ticketed by campus police. What a coincidence.

Meanwhile, UNC athletics director Bubba Cunningham and coach Roy Williams are still “gathering the facts” before passing judgment on Hairston. Don’t know what facts are left to gather. Full disclosure—I’m an N.C. State fan, but I have a helluva lot of respect for Dean Smith, and my gut reaction is Dean would no longer be gathering facts; he would have told Hairston to pursue his basketball career elsewhere weeks ago.
