City of High Point officials ‘were shocked’ when they received a letter from the U.S. Treasury stating “our records indicate that you owe the U.S. Government $1,794,821.24. You must immediately pay your debt to stop collection action and prevent the addition of more interest, penalties and administrative costs.”

At issue is a lead abatement grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Bottom line is HUD says High Point didn’t follow regulations “governing procurement,” while the city says HUD kept changing the regulations. Whom to believe?

So much for the so-called “free money” from the federal government that cities are always saying is too good to be true. I guess it is.
