We’re waiting for the big event this morning at AFP’s first Defending the American Dream Summit — Fourteen speakers in three hours, including five presidential candidates.

We heard from John McCain last night. I’d tell you what he said, but I think he slept through it, too.

South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint followed McCain, and although he spoke to less than half the crowd that was there for McCain, he had more energy and a much better message that included health care freedom.

Rep. Patrick McHenry, Sen. Elizabeth Dole, and Rep. Walter Jones spoke to the 100-person North Carolina delegation. McHenry’s and Dole’s comments were relatively innocuous, though the Senator stated her agreement with the principles of free markets and limited government more than she demonstrated her agreement. Jones seemed unsure what group he was talking to as he seemed to advocate protectionism and economic incentives.

Jones also showed the unintended consequences of well intentioned policies. When asked about attaching names to earmarks, he said it was a great idea and spoke about getting $1 million to dredge a seaport in North Carolina for economic development. Nothing like personifying what’s wrong with Congress.
