Taxpayers are hurting, so Maggie Valley is going to give its festival grounds a booster shot. The town has allocated $260,000 in its 2011-12 budget for the grounds and two festivals. The tourist economy has sagged, with major attractions like Ghost Town in the Sky folding. The welfare for the festivals is intended to attract tourists so hoteliers and restaurateurs can pay taxes at the rates town government needs to support its lifestyle. Festival Director Audrey Hager is of the opinion re-branding can turn the key.
