The year’s first baby in the Triangle was Hispanic, which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Its parents are apparently not citizens since they had to be interviewed via an interpreter, and speaking English is a requirement for citizenship.
That is not to say they are here illegally, however. And it’s also possible they had insurance that kept the taxpayers from paying for the delivery. But we’ll never know since The N&O didn’t think these were important questions to ask, even though both get at a public policy issue that the public thinks is the most important only after foreign policy and terrorism.
