There is a great article in County News magazine referring to the emerging “Mega-Trends” that illustrate that there are BIG changes looming for counties nationwide..
I’ve been contacted by several commissioners already referring to the article and hope that even more will read it. If we accept the theoritical construct, we are in for serious issues here in NC in the coming years.
In brief, here they are:
1) The state local government partnership is waning (yes in NC)
2) There is a substantial erosion of local governments’ fiscal health (again yes)
3) People now perceive local government entities to be redundant, fragmented, competitive and inefficient. (somewhat yes but becoming more so)
4) Citizens are not engaged with/by their local governments; in fact, they are becoming anti-government (again yes)
5) Erosion of grassroots government. (and yet again, yes)
