What is the proposed flag burning amendment to the Constitution really about? At the present time people do not have a right to burn American flags that do not belong to them. No one has a right to take a flag that is not their own, for example, a flag that they pulled down from a flag pole in a public square or a flag that they stole from their neighbor’s yard, and burn it. This amendment is about property rights. It is about whether or not a person has a right to burn a flag that they purchased with their own money or possibly even stitched together with their own hands. In other words, do people have the right to dispose of their own property as they see fit? For this reason, no self-respecting conservative should have any problem voting against this amendment–unless, of course they are suggesting that the government not allow private ownership of flags. Now wouldn’t that be ironic?
