We welcome the Uptown paper of record’s entry into the tax deadbeat beat on any level, but c’mon guys, zeroing in on the West side non-profits? The $77K is peanuts compared to the hundreds of thousands owed by massive corporate entities with billions — trillions even — in assets.

Besides, the real scandal in the dealings of City West Community Development Corp. and Northwest Corridor Community Development Corp. and the like is not so much the outstanding taxes, it is the use of taxpayer dollars to conduct land deals that may serve to benefit a tight ring of insiders. This has always been the scandal in local real estate deals: The wired and connected pocket big money — and/or property — while the cost and risk is socialized. The deals themselves need the investigative zeal, not the ho-hum that the end results are not throwing off property tax payments.

In the meantime, we’ll keep poking around the big money and the big names for more deadbeats and sweetheart deals.
