Last night, the Buncombe County Commissioners might have gone home in time for dinner, but instead an argument broke out over a resolution intended to make them feel green. Commissioner Ellen Frost spearheaded the campaign for a resolution, which Commissioner Holly Jones applauded. Those who supported the resolution, asking county purchasing agents to procure only green chemicals, argued there was nothing binding in the language. It was just recommending suggested guidelines and such. Commissioners Mike Fryar, David King, and Joe Belcher thought the resolution fixed nothing and only introduced potential problems. King wanted people to be able to degrease their lawnmowers. Fryar wanted the health department to get rid of germs. King was won over by a friendly amendment that said chemicals used would have to do the job and that all chemicals must conform to applicable law. To that, Fryar said the resolution was now doubly useless. He referred to it as “fluff and buff.”
