This is an annual event:

House Speaker Jim Black stopped the clock in the chamber just before 9 p.m. Wednesday to attempt to avoid violating a House rule prohibiting sessions from going past that time.

If the Speaker can stop time by halting the clock, then he can also extend the “self-imposed deadline” by refusing to turn the calendar. Then everyone can get some rest and make better-informed decisions on the bills they’re rushing to finish.

Please — if the rule doesn’t serve a purpose, then change it.
