I continue to be astounded and saddened by the opposition to a proposed public charter school in Chapel Hill that would seek to help close the achievement gap between white and minority kids. As JLF’s Terry Stoops has noted, the school is being proposed by Angela Lee, the daughter of Chapel Hill’s first African American mayor — Howard Lee — and would be named the Howard and Lillian Lee Scholars Charter School. Leading the opposition is the local chapter of the NAACP. To be clear, charter schools are public schools. They do not take away money from the public system. They are part of the public system. No school should receive funding for children it isn’t educating, which is the logic behind the opposition’s argument that charter schools take money away from the system. This school’s application should be evaluated on facts, not alarmism.

Sad.
