For those concerned about the health of the U.S. Constitution after decades of abuses from presidents, members of Congress, and Supreme Court justices, Thomas Woods and Kevin Gutzman have bad news: the Constitution is already dead.
The authors of the politically incorrect guides to American History and the Constitution, respectively, have teamed up to write the new book, Who Killed The Constitution? Woods and Gutzman’s answer will please neither Republicans nor Democrats:
For nearly three-quarters of a century, the Left, meaning mainly but not solely the Democratic Party, has concocted arguments for the Constitution’s essential meaninglessness, for the federal government’s ability to do things the Constitution previously had been understood as banning. In some sense, in George W. Bush’s administration the Left has gotten what it deserved, as the defanged Constitution they themselves have encouraged has proven to be no obstacle to even the most constitutionally outlandish initiatives of the Left’s opponents.
Woods and Gutzman catalog a “dirty dozen” list of constitutional abuses, covering some of the same ground as a recent book also called The Dirty Dozen. Woods and Gutzman say they hope their book can remind people that the Constitution “remains a useful bludgeon to employ against government power grabs.”
