Forsyth County commissioners last night voted to appeal a judge’s ruling that county meetings cannot begin with prayer, with chairman Dave Plyler casting the swing vote.

Fellow commissioner Walter Marshall was at it again last night —- he denounced the “the pro-appeal effort as one dominated by white Southern Baptists who had backed slavery in former times and, he said, now practiced discrimination against women.”

Marshall’s stance against prayer in public meetings is fair enough, but making such ridiculous statements undermines his credibility. Politically speaking, Plyler no doubt thought it wise not to align himself with Marshall.
