This is an interesting take on Caswell County’s Ambulance Service:

“EMS is not required to transport patients to their hospital of
choice,” Hall said. “I’ve talked about it for a while and we need to
have a policy and we need to have a protocol.”

Hall said the
county attorney has sent the board a memo in the past stating that when
the units are going out-of-county they are taken out of operation.
North Carolina law states the EMS must transport the patient to the
nearest hospital and not to a hospital of the patient’s choosing. When
some patients request to be taken as far as Chapel Hill or Duke
University Medical Center, Caswell ambulances are taken out of service
to the county for hours at a time. Only two ambulances are in operation
at any given time in the county.
