The city of San Diego has voted 5-3 to ban Wal-Marts. One of the proponents, quoted by AP, explained his vote this way:

Councilman Tony Young, who joined the 5-3 majority, countered, “I have a vision for San Diego and that vision is about walkable, livable communities, not big, mega-structures that inhibit people’s lives.”

One of the opponents of the ban saw it this way:

“Quite simply, I do not think it is the role of the San Diego City Council to dictate where families should buy their groceries,” said Councilman Kevin Faulconer, who opposed the ban.

There couldn’t be a starker contrast between a nanny-state liberal and someone who prizes individual liberty. One wants to impose his vision on others. The other wants to let others make their own choices. Elected leaders in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill, which camp are you in?
