The BRAC recommendations came out today. In case you are wondering exactly what’s happening in Fayetteville, here’s the deal: Essentially Ft. Bragg is taking over Pope AFB.

Ft. Bragg changes: the 7th Special Forces Group (SFG) moves to Eglin AFB, FL. The 82nd Airborne Division gains a 4th Brigade Combat Team (BCT) plus some troops coming from Europe. Ft. Bragg nets out about +4,000 personnel.

Fort McPherson is a big HQ complex in Atlanta that would be closed. The Headquarters US Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), and the Headquarters US Army Reserve Command (USARC) would relocate from Fort McPherson to Pope Air Force Base. These commands generate military and civilian jobs (+1,148 military, +1,153 civilian) new to Pope.

To make room for these additions, the current flying leaves Pope. The C-130’s go to Little Rock, AR the A-10s to Moody AFB in Georgia. An associate/active C-130 squadron would go into Pope. About 6,000 personnel transfer out, so the net is slight gain overall for Fayetteville (military down, civilian up).
