A column in the Elizabeth City Daily Advance begins with this line: ?I would like to buy organic food and give my children the advantage of a chemical-free diet.?

News alert: a newspaper columnist has discovered food not made up of chemical compounds. Of course, he means ?man-made chemicals,? I suppose, though arguably vegetables and fruits bred to manifest certain characteristics, as most grown organically have been, contain chemicals that would not exist in them except for human interference.

What a fantastic hoax this is on consumers. If I were a regulation-minded guy, I?d come down heavily on organic-food hucksters for perpetrating nonsense.
