Anyone else paying attention to the scripts their browser loads — which should be everyone — might have noticed that charlotteobserver.com started loading a little bug a couple weeks ago that appends “Read more:” and the page URL at the end of anything copy operation. This is hysterical.

A quick check of other McClatchy site turns up no such attempt to tag content on the fly. I would love to know what the motivation was for this bit of clumsy programming. I’ve never come across any other site that attempts police how users interact with content in such a way. Has anyone else?

I can only guess that someone Uptown thinks that content is being copied willy-nilly and re-posted without attribution, perhaps on message boards.
