I’ve written on occasion about faked hate crimes on college campuses. This past spring there was a doozy of one at Claremont, for example. And this past fall, Duke reeled from the revelation that a notorious rape there likely had been fabricated.

But here’s a new hoax that didn’t occur on a college campus, but which makes me think it takes a scholar to succeed at pulling one off, if only temporarily:

An Independence man was charged Monday with filing a false police report. Floyd Elliot, 22, told police two subjects attacked him in a parking lot and tried to burn the word “FAG” into his chest and carve the same thing on his forehead.
