When the Raleigh News & Observer published a story on the controversial issue of building landfills in this state, Michael Sanera responded with a letter to the editor, published in Sunday’s paper. He explained that those who oppose landfill construction ignore that the state is a net exporter of trash, and that the last thing North Carolina needs is government intervention into the free market through regulation. “The surest way to stop progress in solid waste disposal is for government to impede the developing interstate market in this area,” Sanera wrote. Sanera’s recent Spotlight paper explains the benefits to local government of entering the solid waste management business.
