And none other than the N&R calls them out on the hole in Greensboro police chief finalist Lisa Womack’s resume:

It doesn’t inspire confidence that a candidate who lost her last job made it this far into Greensboro’s hiring process before a background investigation was completed and the full story of her departure was learned. What if there were detrimental circumstances? Hiring a police chief is City Manager Rashad Young’s responsibility, but he can’t make a selection until more is known.

I give our local paper of record all due credit for letting the city hear it for botching the hiring process. The N&R also repeats crazy talk that if neither candidate is impressive enough —and it doesn’t look good for Womack right now —-then the entire hiring process will start over. So what was the point of narrowing the list to finalists in the first place?

The howler is the city thought it was being so above board with its selection panel. Perhaps if the city had put more effort into vetting the candidates and less effort into its ‘panel,’ they wouldn’t be in this situation right now.
