At last night’s meeting, the Greensboro City Council approved a $1.5 million loan to help keep the International Civil Rights Center and Museum open. The vote was 6-3, with council members Zack Matheny, Tony Wilkins and Dianne Bellamy-Small voting ‘no.’

Stay tuned — needless to say museum officials grossly underrated attendance when it opened in 2010, and it’s hard to imagine exactly how far this $1.5 million will go as the museum struggles to pay off the staggering debt related to historic tax credits.

What jumped out at me when watching discussion and debate were comments by council member Mairkay Abuzuaiter. At first I thought Abuzuaiter was speaking out against the loan, but then she quickly reversed course by saying —I’m paraphrasing here — that the council accommodates pretty much everyone else who shows up with their hand out, so why shouldn’t they help the museum out?
