The City of Greensboro will offer rebates for property owners participating in the energy efficiency program funded through the $5 million Department of Energy grant. Remember City Council member Danny Thompson asked hard questions about the program last week, and I don’t sustainability director Dan Curry liked it.

Restrictions are extensive —-caps on rebate amounts, exactly what is eligible for a rebate, which contractors can perform the work, and work performed must cut energy costs by 15 percent.

Note also that one of the first projects under the program is the Nettie Coad Apartments on MLK Boulevard.

I’ll go ahead and ask: why is it taking a federal grant to upgrade heating and AC on a city-owned building?
