The Guilford County Board of Education finally signs off on bond totaling $457 million. Next stop, county commissioners.

Again, the board passed the bond after dickering with a few million here and a few million there, so to speak. Board member Garth Hebert had some thoughts on the subject:

From the beginning I sought to reduce these costs. I’m not set on these costs, and it really sounds bad coming from an accountant that when you start shaving dollars off, it doesn’t make a huge difference, because personally I think we could shave $30-$40 million off this bond by really working hard at it. In my heart, I think it could be done.

These types of things are always said not only when passing bonds but when passing government budgets. The fact that they’re said by people in the minority —- the extreme minority —- says quite a bit about the direction in which government spending is heading. GCS makes its case over and over again regarding high construction costs. They can make the argument over and over again, but Guilford County residents have to wonder where it’s going to end. Hebert’s remarks are appreciated, but is there really an end in sight?
