The Guillford County Board of Education elected Mo Green as the school system’s new superintendent. That will make the N&R’s Doug Clark happy. Expect a lead editorial praising the decision in the next day or two.

Clark and I didn’t exactly see the same thing when watching Green and the other finalist, Scotland County superintendent Shirley Prince, speak at Wednesday’s public meeting. I realize it’s difficult to judge candidates on the fly, but Prince was clearly more well-spoken and specific about she’s already accomplished and what she hoped to accomplish for GCS.

Most of what I heard from Green were catch phrases repeated over and over again. Clark thinks it’s significant that Green is bothered by seeing students walking around without books. He wants change that (no kidding), and “we’ll work on opening them later.” This is pretty basic stuff, and the fact that Green views it as a process is bothersome.

Clark says Green is made of stern stuff, but I personally didn’t see it. If anything, I saw someone who’s going to have trouble standing up to the school board, which is a scary thought considering the existing difficulty the board has when making a decision.

I realize I’ve advocated for bringing in a non-educrat to head GCS, and Prince clearly was the educrat. But an outsider should be talking about running the school system in more efficient manner. I didn’t hear any of that from Green. If anything, he was about mo money down at CMS. Mo money for the system, mo money for Superintendent Peter Gorman.

This is going to be interesting.
