The Smoky Mountain Center for Mental Health is closing a facility due to a shortage of psychiatric nurses. It proposes as an alternative a roving band of psychiatrists and nurses to help people in crisis. Rumor has it that burnout rates in the mental health profession have been heightened by excessive and ever-changing government paperwork requirements. Nonetheless, the center is trying to drum up excitement for the area’s outdoor sports amenities in a national recruitment program.

Many clients currently without service need detox. According to Director of Services Doug Trantham, 80% of persons needing detox are uninsured, and the state doesn’t have enough money to subsidize the service. Left untreated, addicts waste a lot of taxpayer dollars for law enforcement, EMT, and criminal justice services. Users, however, continue to demand the right to do with their body as they wish, and public schools continue to teach value-neutrality.
