Interesting that the High Point Enterprise hasn’t followed up on the N&R’s New Year’s Day story on GEO Care’s legal issues.

The N&R reports the ACLU has sued GEO Care “over the conditions under which it keeps inmates.” The company is also reportedly the focus of a Department of Justice investigation into a youth prison it operates in Mississippi.

During the recent rezoning case, GEO Care President Jorge Dominicis was asked by High Point City Council member Mike Pugh if the company was facing any lawsuits:

“We’re a very big company. I’m sure that there are some lawsuits. I’m not the general counsel for the company. I really don’t know specifically how many lawsuits,” Dominicis said. “We don’t have anything unusual or beyond what a normal company might experience … or a local government may experience.”

The ACLU’s lawsuit and the DOJ investigation is based on a report by Dr. Terry Kupers, whose conclusion was “(b)oth basic custody and mental-health treatment were inadequate” at the Eastern Mississippi Correctional Facility.
