I got this from a Schau ins Land a magazine that teaches advanced German language skills. Note that it validates our notion that those pushing smoking bans can legitimately be called “lifestyle Nazis.”  Hitler and “the Nazis campaigned against smoking and promoted pioneering research into its dangers.”

Germany is one of the few remaining havens for smokers in the European Union. Belgium, Britain, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Malta, Norway, Spain, and Sweden all have banned smoking in public places. German trains are among the last in western Europe to have smoking areas, although some commuter trains are smoke-free and smoking is prohibited on airplanes and buses and in many taxis. Cigarettes are widely advertised in public spaces, and cigarette-vending machines cover the country. About a quarter of the population still lights up despite proven health risks to smokers and to those around them. The tobacco industry and its lobbyists, health experts say, have been extremely effective in influencing German politicians. In a recent cover story, Der Spiegel also partly blamed the Nazis? legacy for postwar Germany?s reluctance to crack down on smoking. Although German soldiers at the front received cigarettes in their rations, the magazine noted, the Nazis campaigned against smoking and promoted pioneering research into its dangers. Adolf Hitler himself was a vegetarian, teetotaler, and nonsmoker.
