Are you ready for the new downtown Greensboro ice rink? The N&R sure is, putting everybody’s mind at ease that the rink will function just fine in less-than-winter-like weather.

Mind you, I’m no expert, but as I watched the city do everything it could to justify a $5 million DOE grant, I couldn’t help but wonder just how ‘green’ the ice rink is, based on the graphic in the N&R print edition:

*Dimensions: 40 x 85

*Square feet: 3,400

*Tubing underneath ice: Six miles

*Amount of cooling in the tubes: 1,000 gallons

*Capacity of chiller: 150 tons

*Number of average homes chiller could cool: 30

*Amount of water needed to fill the rink: 2,300 gallons

I guess the city has plenty of water now that the Randleman reservoir is flowing to G’boro, making the days of brown lawns and mellow yellow seem sooooo aughts.
