Very, very interesting words from Mecklenburg County district attorney Peter Gilchrist. When asked about his working relationship with CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe during a press conference at the GovCenter, Gilchrist went all passive aggressive.

“No, we have had the level of communication that I think is necessary,” Gilchrist said with WCNC cameras rolling. Gilchrist also complained that his office is given cases with weak evidence and CMPD officers miss court dates too often.

Well, it is on, baby. As I’ve said before, there should be some level of friction between prosecutors and police as they serve different functions in our criminal justice system. The problem in Charlotte has been that the two organizations have in the past marched in lock-step in pursuit of the exact same function. Namely, to deny Charlotte’s crime problem to the public and minimize the number of young black males incarcerated for serious felonies to the greatest extent possible.

This has been the grand Charlotte bargain for decades. Again, you are not fooling anyone.
