By a 3-2 vote, Rockingham County commissioners pulled the plug on the Horse Park of the South.

Commissioner Craig Travis made the resolution to spend no more money on the project, and fellow commissioner Keith “Zero” Mabe followed up with an amendment to terminate it altogether.

That’s the good news. Bad news is more than $2 million in taxpayers’ money has been flushed, and the county is stuck with 160 acres of land.

Regarding comparisons to Greensboro’s taxpayer-funded aquatic center —- yes, voters did approve the parks and rec bond that included the aquatic center, but the amount they approved was $12 million. The cost of the aquatic center is now almost $19 million.

The cost of the horse park was originally projected to be $13 million, but increased to more than $23 million. So yes, a comparison is valid, and should serve a as a lesson when future so-called ‘economic development’ projects come down the pipeline.
