Henderson County Commissioner Grady Hawkins wants to opt out of the Land of Sky Regional Council. He views the regional planning agency’s work as just sitting around the table writing grant applications. Justin Hembree, Land of Sky’s executive director, argues dropping out could really mess up the tangled web of strings to federal dollars. What’s more, “We value [Henderson County’s] partnership as a regional partner.” Henderson County is one of four counties planned by the regional council. It currently contributes $38,426 a year to Land of Sky and another $20,000 to its partner in partnering, the French Broad MPO.
