A recent report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics has Big Labor singing a happy tune. For the first time in many years there has been an increase in union membership. In 2007, union numbers increased by some 300,000.

The explanation for this is found in the disturbing fact that public sector employment increased by 3.2% last year while private sector employment grew by only .8%. Of all the new jobs created last year, 43% were in public employment.

Unions fare much better in public employment, of course. They don’t have to worry about competition and efficiency.
