Christopher’s quote of Bastiat’s essay — both the title and the concept introduced in the opening paragraphs — is well applied. The second example (“The Disbanding of Troops”) lines up with a comment from a Wake County Schools administrator:

“Wake County Public Schools is a growing school district and that is good news that we are growing.”

Since the story dealt with overcrowding in the Wake County schools, long-term lack of funding for staff and faculty, proposals controversial to parents, and proposals vigorously opposed by students ? explain to me again why growth in a publicly-funded and regulated activity, with all sorts of concomitant troubles, is per se a good thing? Particularly in the presence of several popular alternatives?
