You know, it was a good and creative idea at one point. Advocates of reforming Medicare along market-friendly lines ? introducing more private health plans to compete for business, allowing tax-free savings accounts, etc. ? went along with the idea of offering a prescription drug beneft as a deal-sweetner.

Well, even since the Capitol Hill Republicans got a hold of the idea, it’s been going from sweet to tart. This little analysis shows the fiscal insanity of continuing along the current legislative course, which will basically just expand the Medicare entitlement without doing anything significant to restructure the program. The result will be more government control over health care, higher costs, and higher payroll or income taxes.

Just another piece of evidence for the “only about a nickel’s worth of difference” file.
