As Democratic legislative leaders meet to haggle over final provisions of the 2008-2009 state budget, Republican leaders used their weekly news conference to present an alternative plan.

As in years past, Republicans used the budget proposals already approved in the House and Senate as the basis for their alternative.  The GOP legislators contend their plan would spend $500 million less than Gov. Mike Easley’s budget proposal, $327 million less than the plan approved in the House, and $343 million less than the plan approved in the Senate.
