In a bit of a surprise, Republican candidates picked up all three contested seats, taking out two incumbents and winning an open seat. The GOP now holds a 5-4 majority on the new nine-member board.

Jerry Branson defeated incumbent Kirk Perkins in District 4, Jeff Phillips defeated Paul Gibson in District 5 ( saw lots of Gibson signs here in Fisher Park and Hank Henning defeated first-time candidate Linda Kellerman to win the District 6 seat 53.1 percent to 46.9 percent.

As I posted earlier this week, with Chairman Skip Alston and Commissioner Billy Yow also gone —opting not to run for reelection— Guilford County government is indeed heading in a new direction.
