The federal government is deflating US currency to provide $1.4 million for repairs for a recent Maggie Valley landslide. State and local governments will provide a 25% match. Funds are availed through the USDA’s Emergency Watershed Protection Program, because a watershed is imperiled. It could be argued that rockslides are natural, and government shouldn’t be corrupting the environment. It is as if rivers should flow straight and not be allowed to make horseshoe bends and oxbow lakes. When it comes to the environment, change is bad.

On the other hand, concern is expressed for people who live and own property on now unstable lots. It would be painfully cliché to complain about a right to a government-subsidized retaining wall, and the right to build on mountainsides, cliffs, floodplains, and tornado alleys knowing full well what could happen.
