The thinkers running Raleigh have decided: Garbage disposals bad. Per WRAL (which offers the news under a rather flippant headline):

Raleigh began disposing of garbage disposals Monday, banning new or replacement installations and adding teeth to the grinder – a $25,000-per-day fine for violations.

It makes Raleigh one of the first cities in the nation to ban garbage disposals.

“The disposals (have) a big environmental impact in a negative direction on the system, in terms of the water it uses (and) grease. I don’t think there’s any question about that,” Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker said.

Earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal reported on how garbage disposals may be the “environmentally friendly” solution.
