Now that some developers have enough confidence in the economy to start building again, the city will host some Downtown Master Plan subcommittee meetings. You may recall the plan sought to create neighborhood identities with a new-urbanist, pedestrian-interactive charm. Anybody wanting to build in the city would be bound to provide community benefits, ranging from public art to rent-controlled housing, in exchange. The meetings will be held at times convenient for anybody who doesn’t have to be at work during normal business hours.

As was related earlier today, the city doesn’t want to see anybody patronizing a fast-food drive-thru in between jobs or a person of color carrying laundry bags to a bus stop on Merrimon Avenue. The city wants to see Reese Witherspoon in her pink Jackie-O outfit walking her poodle between cappuccino shops and Kwame Kilpatrick in his pin-stripe Superfly suit hustling on the cell phone between law firms.
