What happens after all my red-faced railing against government in the housing business? Forsyth County and the City of Winston-Salem decide to —you guessed it—- get in the housing business:
Forsyth County plans to get in line for more than $2 million that will become available under a new federal program that would allow the county to buy and resell foreclosed residential dwellings.
By a 6-1 vote last night, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution of intent to apply for the money under the newly created Neighborhood Stabilization Program.
…The county and Winston-Salem would jointly apply for the money available under the new program. Dan Kornelis, the county’s housing director, said that the county would have a chance to make a final decision on taking part in the program once all the details are ironed out.
The lone ‘no’ vote was Commissioner Debra Conrad, who spoke out against “another liberal giveaway program.” Fellow Commissioner Walter Marshall countered ‘that if the city and county do not get the money ‘somebody else will.'”
That’s because the money’s always there.
