Mission Health Systems (That’s Synergese for “hospital.”) has a bad reputation for gobbling up private practitioners. However, changes to Medicaid/Medicare funding have been blamed for making it disadvantageous for small operations to compete with large conglomerates. To fight George Washington’s fire with fire, at least according to the Asheville Citizen-Times, Senator Jim Davis (R-Macon) has introduced legislation that would require Mission Hospital to amend its Certificate of Public Advantage. The special legislation targets only Mission Hospital. It would cap the percentage of physicians in the area that could be employed by Mission and require Mission to file with the state and subject to public comment “any proposed new acquisition, affiliation or joint venture.”
