A few weeks ago there was an outcry over cuts in service hours to the Carrboro library branch in Orange County. Today, however, comes this short item in the News & Observer indicating the library will restore the hours to previous levels.

Brenda Stephens, the director of regional library system that runs the county libraries, said officials found several new ways to save money, including delaying the purchase of bulk supplies such as library cards and renting some books at a fraction of the purchase price.

Most people change and innovate only when they are forced to do so. In the case of government, when funding is appropriated every year, with virtually no questions asked and no justification required, human nature takes over and people do things the very same way they’ve always done them.

When forced to innovate, library officials did so. As a taxpayer, I appreciate that. Let’s hope we see more of this.
