Pretty incredible article in this week’s Rhino about Greensboro residents Jim and Ann Westergaard’s fight against a citation for violating the city’s parking ordinance. In John Hammer’s account, city staff and some members of the Board of Adjustment treated the Westergaards like total crap.

There was no fine, but I say good for the Westergaards for fighting the citation on principle alone. They claimed there was never a white pickup truck parked on their front lawn, and the city’s case was laughable. Still, the board found them in violation, and the appeal cost them money.

I don’t want to believe stuff like this actually happens in our fair city, because I want to believe that the bulk of city staffers are honest, hard-working people. By the same token, take a look at the expressions on the faces of city staff as the City Council (thank goodness) was asking some hard questions Tuesday night about such-and-such program, initiative, partnership, etc. They weren’t happy campers.

Fact is government’s been on a power trip way too long, and it’s simply time for it to end.
