This morning, the radio broadcast another example of media-generated nonsense. Hardly a soul is disputing there was a tragedy in Boston. However, reporters needing to supply their 800 words look for a proverbial local angle. They therefore call the police chief to ask what he is doing about it. All the while, the reporter is thinking the dum-dum that consumes the story is thinking, “Somebody bombed the Boston Marathon, ergo, ergo, ERGO somebody is going to bomb an Asheville thrift shop.” We could skip the chief’s comments. We know he’s going to say he has all kinds of high-tech, secret operations; but he can’t spill the beans lest a terrorist is listening. Meanwhile, the chief and policy-makers, being new at the game, construe the reporter’s need to fill space as public demand for action. And, voila! Capacity building.
