A group of Granville County residents successfully fought city hall in the 1980s, preventing the siting of a waste incinerator in the community. Now the group — the Granville Non-Violent Action Team or GNAT — has reconstituted to fight Homeland Security’s possible selection of Butner for the National Bio-Agro Defense Facility, which would house deadly diseases and conduct research just north of the Triangle. Butner is one of six locations under final consideration. The public debate has begun, which is good. To educate yourself on the pros and cons of this facility, there are several good sites. The state consortium which supports bringing the lab to Butner has lots of information here. The GNAT opposition site can be found here.
