The main feature of the event was a panel discussion about the Farm Bill. Cutting funding is expected to increase the number of food-insecure in the area from one in six.

Organic farmer Tom Elmore observed, “When you see farmers on food stamps, there’s something wrong with that picture.”

Asheville City Councilman Gordon Smith told how the city is advancing food policy by changing residential zoning ordinances to include tailgate markets as an approved use. Three markets have since been established.
