Last Thursday’s Chapel Hill Herald carries a why-you-should-vote-for-me guest column by John Herrera, a candidate for a seat on the Carrboro Board of Alderman. I applaud his, any other candidates’, willingness to serve. However, one of his proposals is to create a “Resident’s Outreach Advisory Board.” He writes that it would be composed of “a diverse membership of under-represented voices.” I continue to be amazed that, at a time when there’s never been more opportunity to be heard and to communicate with anyone and everyone, he and others believe many of us are being ignored, drowned out, oppressed, etc. Here is a list of the groups Mr. Herrera thinks are “under-represented”:

— people of color
— immigrants
— working class families
— single-parent families
— unique populations (I think I qualify since I’m a conservative living in Orange County)
— students
— young people
— seniors

Who’s left?
